Will garbage disposals soon join buggy whips and cassette tapes as one of those curiosities from the past? Maybe not this year or next, but a growing number of commercial firms and government agencies have begun to launch organics composting programs that divert food waste from the sewer and the landfill today.
Please join us at 11:30am on Thursday, February 16 to hear three compelling examples of large scale food composting composting in action. Ian Pope, Waste Management's Organics Program Manager, will outline the collection process Waste Management has developed to collect and compost food waste from households and commercial food establishments. Weis Markets’ Sustainability Specialist, Patti Olenick will share the details of the supermarket chain’s innovative Organics Diversion Program that keeps those “past sell by date” items out of the dumpster. And, last but not least, Alan Wilcom, Howard County Maryland’s Recycling Division Chief will reveal progress-to-date on the county’s ground-breaking food scraps collection program.
Should InSinkErator lower its sales projections? Should your dog sit at, instead of under, the table? Maybe not this year or next, but yes, it’s happening now and coming to your neighborhood soon!
