Our
last post on Maryland General Assembly Crossover Day, we noted that several of our most-watched bills didn’t make it out of committee.
Since the post, we were pleased to learn that the Mattress Stewardship Program (
HB0858) was given a second chance receiving favorable votes in both the House Environment and Transportation and Economic Matters committees. The bill went on to pass the House 90-37 and was referred to the Senate Rules committee.
The Mattress Stewardship Bill is also receiving media attention, recently being featured in a report by WMAR 2 News. MRN President Kitty McIlroy was interviewed on behalf of MRN for the report
(watch here) saying that the bill is an important step towards building a sustainable waste management system.
During the interview, McIlroy noted that, based on
MDE Data, Maryland has approximately 21 years left of landfill space (less if you factor in population growth), and that mattress waste is a huge problem. The bill will help fund a recycling program to divert old mattresses from the landfills, while also relieving the financial burden placed on many jurisdictions when handling end-of-life mattresses.
