Recap: Costs: More or Less

On October 4, 2013, GBB President and Co-Founder, Harvey Gershman
led a fascinating conversation with a group of MRN members around factors
driving costs, new technologies and the impact of China’s Green Fence.
Cost-saving options discussed
included unbundling collection from processing, negotiating long‐term
contracts so vendors can spread capital depreciation over a longer time frame,
automated collection, every other week collection and closed market
contracting.

Gershman
also described new conversion technologies and shared findings from his recent
trip to Germany where the introduction of leading edge mechanical biological treatment to waste processing
offers great promise for waste reduction and cost control. He closed with an
analysis of the effect China’s Green Fence may have on recycling in the US
and MD.
